SJHSS has been serving the community for over 40 years. The school is unique in that it is not affiliated with a synagogue As a result, we can keep our costs affordable, class sizes smaller to obtain optimal learning levels, and even offer aides to assist in all aspects of the classroom activities. Furthermore, all students are welcome, including those that may require more support in academic or social areas.
Starting in Kindergarten, children can begin their Judaic education and continue until they complete seventh grade. However, students are welcome to begin any time during their schooling.
The curriculum, which is covered during the 10:00 AM - 12:15 PM sessions on Sunday mornings, spans learning the Hebrew alphabet and words, prayers, bible stories, history, current events, holidays, ethics, and the Holocaust. The students learn all of this in an age-appropriate manner, in addition to their prayers and torah portions, in order to become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah.Â
Bar and Bat Mitzvah aged students are responsible for completing a project and performing some type of community service prior to their Bar or Bat Mitzvah date. South Jersey Hebrew Sunday School has a cantor that works with the Bar and Bat Mitzvah students on a regular basis. Additionally, we have a rabbi affiliated with our school.
With the assistance of a strong parent volunteer group, SJHSS holds a Passover seder each year, a yearly Purim carnival, a traditional Hanukkah celebration, Shabbat services, and other family-centered celebrations.
